WSteve Woodley Charity Football Event brochureA Truelove & Son Ltd was very proud to support a recent charity football match that is organised every year by one of our team members in memory of his brother.

David Woodley works in our Monumental Masonry department. His brother, Steve Woodley, sadly passed away from a brain tumour on the 15th July 2012 at the relatively young age of 54. He would have celebrated his sixtieth birthday last February.

David has been organising a charity football match in his brother’s memory since May 2014. This year’s match was therefore the fifth annual Steve Woodley Charity Football event. The first match was held in Guildford, whereas this year’s match was held at the Meadowbank Football Ground on Mill Lane in Dorking, Surrey, on Saturday 9th June.

David chose a football match to honour Steve’s memory because both David and Steve were football players and used to play for the same team, Whitehall Athletic, back in the 1980s. Many of their former team members now come back some thirty years later to take part in the event and to honour Steve’s memory.

Writing in this year’s programme, David said: “Knowing Steve, he would have been completely bemused and humbled by what has been achieved by everybody in his honour, but equally chuffed too. He was a fantastic brother. Kind, unselfish, always willing to help, funny – with a great sense of humour, reliable and 100% dependable. He was a wonderful son, great dad and devoted husband too. God bless you Steve – you’re always in our hearts.”

We were proud to support the match by sponsoring the gift awards, and we previously provided the team shirts that were once again worn this year. In the programme David mentioned us, saying that he would like to thank “my work place WA Truelove & Son Ltd. Thanks to Simon and David for supplying the team shirts and sponsoring the gift awards this year. Your generosity is much appreciated. Also, to Paul, and to Karen for getting the wheels in motion and doing the stuff I can’t do and to Michelle who straight away embraced my idea.”

This event, as per the previous four events, was held in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity and was kindly sponsored by the Farnborough Branch of Barclays who agreed to make a like for like donation up to the value of £1000. This year the event raised £3,800 for the Brain Tumour Charity, which was the most they have raised since they started five years ago. The four previous charity matches have raised a total of £9,714 for the charity, so in total they have raised over £13,500 over the last five years – an incredible achievement.

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer in children and under 40’s in the UK. The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain tumours, making a difference every day to the lives of people with a brain tumour and their families. They fund pioneering research to increase survival, raise awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours and provide support for everyone affected to improve quality of life. They rely 100% on voluntary funding, so fundraising events like this one are extremely important to them to help them defeat brain tumours.

Truelove’s are proud to have provided a crucial role at the heart of our local community and to have done so since we first opened in Sutton in 1885. For more information about WA Truelove & Son Ltd and all our funeral services, please get in touch with us.
